Antonym Sequence in Qur’anic Arabic: An Emically Etiological Approach

This article etiologically examines which principles pattern and govern antonym sequences in the Qur’anic discourse why antonymous pair members are prone to a particularly regular order Qur’an. To conduct rigorous analysis, builds on Jones’s (2002) analytic toolkit for sequence (Chapter 8, 120-137) tests it dataset manually collected from Qur’an (1420 pairs). The accounts language use according rules include morphology, positivity, magnitude, chronology, gender, phonology, idiomaticity, frequency, markedness. results showed that most of these retrievable replicable across Arabic, with, however, both quantitative qualitative variations due peculiarly idiosyncratic nature Given not all sequential applicable, new ones were developed: context, end-rhyme, distance. general conclusion is ruled by sometimes overruled teleological reasons.
